Designing the Outdoors of Tomorrow: My Feature on CNBC’s Advancements

Exploring the Future of Outdoor Living: As Seen on CNBC Advancements

This afternoon, I had the incredible honor of appearing on CNBC's Advancements series, Season 5, Episode 10: Augmented Technology. It was an unforgettable opportunity to share insights on the exciting evolution of outdoor living spaces and the impact of innovative design and technology in commercial environments. A huge thank-you to Struxure and Niles Bolton Associates for inviting me to be part of this journey and for their dedication to reshaping how we think about outdoor living.

The Shift in Outdoor Living

The outdoor living trend has transformed dramatically over the past decade, evolving from basic patio furniture setups to fully integrated, functional outdoor environments. Whether it's commercial rooftops, hospitality spaces, or residential backyards, these spaces are becoming extensions of indoor living—complete with smart technology, weatherproof structures, and luxurious design.

During my segment on Advancements, I had the chance to discuss how design is responding to the demand for seamless indoor-outdoor transitions. Modern outdoor spaces aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re about functionality, sustainability, and creating environments where people want to gather, relax, and connect.

The Role of Technology

One key aspect I touched on is the role of technology in outdoor design. Products like Struxure’s adjustable pergolas are changing the game, allowing users to adapt their spaces in real-time to the elements. These systems integrate features like motorized louvers, weather sensors, and even smart home connectivity, making outdoor living as comfortable and versatile as indoor spaces.

For commercial designers like myself, these advancements open up endless possibilities. Imagine designing rooftop bars, corporate terraces, or hotel courtyards that dynamically adapt to weather conditions while offering year-round usability. Technology bridges the gap between convenience and luxury, creating spaces that are as practical as they are beautiful.

Collaboration with Struxure and Niles Bolton Associates

I’m so grateful to have collaborated with Struxure and Niles Bolton Associates on this feature. Struxure’s vision for innovation aligns perfectly with my passion for designing spaces that enhance the way people live and work. Their ability to combine advanced technology with cutting-edge design is inspiring and critical in a world where outdoor environments are increasingly valued.

Working with Niles Bolton Associates also allowed me to bring a holistic design perspective to the conversation. As a firm with a history of integrating thoughtful design across commercial, multifamily residential, and hospitality projects, they understand the importance of creating adaptable spaces that meet both functional and emotional needs.
