How To: Decorate a Bookshelf

Designing a Sophisticated Library for a Bachelor in Memphis, TN

Creating a library that is both functional and stylish is no easy feat, but our recent project for a bachelor in Memphis, TN was a true delight. The client wanted a space to showcase his impressive scotch collection and array of antiques, all while creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for reading and entertaining.

Anne Mason, founder of Anne Mason Design (AMD), guided the design process to blend these elements seamlessly. The goal was to curate a space that felt both refined and approachable, where the bookshelves didn’t just hold books—they told a story.

So, how do you decorate bookshelves the right way? Anne’s approach is all about balance. She carefully layered books with unique antiques, like vintage maps and sculptures, to add character and visual interest. But she didn’t stop there—incorporating the client’s scotch collection was key to making the space feel personalized and truly reflective of his style.

A mix of symmetry and asymmetry ensures the shelves remain visually interesting while maintaining an elegant flow. Anne also recommends varying the heights of objects and using decorative boxes or trays to help organize smaller items. The combination of these details creates a library that is not only functional but also a work of art in itself.
